Samsung expanded its foldable phone portfolio at Unpacked 2026 with the addition of the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Inconspicuous in name, this is the company's newest addition to the series: A passport-style foldable phone that isn't a limited-edition or exclusive device but a mainline entry.
It's wider and thicker than the other foldable models in the 2026 lineup. But judging by the spec sheet, it should be just as well built and durable. Here's what Samsung has shared about its build so far.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 durability: Display protection
Samsung's first passport-style foldable phone adopts some of the latest durability solutions, including Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 protection for the outer display. This is the top-tier display solution from Corning at the moment.
Like the Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 also adopts Samsung's new Flex Titanium display technology. It consists of a titanium backplate and a new titanium foldable display substrate. This additional titanium layer not only helps reduce the display crease but also improves durability.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 durability: IP rating and frame
None of Samsung's new foldable phones push the IP rating bar. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has an IP48 rating for dust and water resistance. It's not an improvement, but it's still a decent rating that should make the Fold 8 as resistant to water ingress as Samsung's premium slab-type Galaxy S flagships.
Oddly, Samsung didn't say much about its choice of materials for the frame. However, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 was upgraded with an Advanced Armor Aluminum frame to match the Ultra model. So it stands to reason that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 also uses this material. We'll let you know if it turns out to be something else.
One last detail worth noting is that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a simpler hinge than the Fold 8 Ultra. In fact, it wasn't designed for Flex Mode, so the Fold 8 lacks this feature altogether. Still, Samsung has an excellent track record in hinge durability, and according to it, the hinge is rated for a whopping 500,000 folds.
To recap, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 sounds a lot like your usual Samsung foldable. That is a good thing, as Galaxy Z devices are built incredibly well despite the inherent vulnerabilities of the softer foldable display.
Exactly how the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will handle independent durability and stress tests is to be determined. But on paper, Samsung's new Fold sounds about as solid as any other Galaxy Z device released over the past couple of years.
